Jude's August Show

On Saturday, August 16, Jude presented us with a talk about his art.

The presentation was called "The soul, the spirit and the structure of tradition". I talked about how all traditions have two parts, a soul and a spirit. The soul is the part of the tradition that is passed along from generation to generation. The spirit is the part of the tradition that an individual brings to it. I spoke about the regional folk tradition in Southern Louisiana of painting concrete statues and how this tradition can be seen in terms of a soul and a spirit. The soul of the tradition is the blank concrete statue. The spirit of the tradition is the coat of paint that makes the plain statue unique.
A mixed crowd of family and friends were present. Pictured are Mrs. Elsie Castille and Haley Vincent, Joe Johnson and Sue Vincent. Uncle Shine and Aunt Annie, who took time from their dancing at the CMFA festival, to attend.
