He has been a Director since 2005 most recently serving as the Director of St. Ann. Joseph has been a team member on 10 facility start ups and has been involved with numerous other projects for Dismas. He assumes his new position effective November 24, 2009.

Dismas Charities, Inc is one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit providers specializing in Community-based re-entry programs. Dismas provides both residential and non-residential supervision and treatment services for federal, state and local criminal justice jurisdictions.

Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Dismas currently operates 25 facilities and 3 support offices in ten states.

Dismas Charities, Inc. is named for the repentant thief who was crucified March 25 c.30 with Jesus Christ on Calvary. According to the Arabic Gospel of the Infancy, which enjoyed great popularity in the West during the Middle Ages, two thieves, Dismas and Gestas, were among a band of highwaymen who ambushed the refugee Holy Family as they were fleeing to Egypt. One thief, it is reported, recognized their holiness and ordered his fellow bandits to leave them alone. This thief was Dismas. Jesus predicted to his mother, Mary, that 30 years later both Dismas and Gestas would be crucified with him in Jerusalem and that Dismas would accompany him to Paradise. At Calvary, Dismas looked toward Jesus and said “Lord remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in Paradise.” In the liturgy of the Orthodox Churches of Greece, Russia, etc., the words of Dismas to Jesus on the cross are spoken just before Holy Communion: “Receive me, O God, at your mystical supper; remember me, Lord, in your kingdom.” Dismas is considered the patron saint of prisoners, reformed thieves, and funeral directors. Like St. Dismas seeking forgiveness, Dismas Charities, Inc. is a story of having faith in God, of charity and compassion, of perseverance through difficult times. One of the values and beliefs adopted by Dismas Charities, Inc. reads: “We believe in the dignity of all individuals and that, as such, all individuals are entitled to be treated with respect and compassion.” Another reads “We believe that all individuals have the capacity to change.”
